Willie Nelson has a very large songbook. Because of that, I knew I’d not know some songs he sang and he probably wouldn’t play some songs I would expect. I have no idea how many songs he sang. I would say 4 or 5 of them were completely new to me (probably not to others). He played a couple of Hank Williams (Sr) songs plus a couple of hymns. He sang songs like On the Road Again, Georgia on My Mind, Whiskey River, and even sang Beer for My Horses (which was the duet he sang with Toby Keith a few years back). He did not sing my favorite Living in the Promiseland. He also, which surprised me very much, did not sing Pancho & Lefty and Seven Spanish Angels which I consider two of his most popular songs. Regardless of the songs he played or didn’t play, it was a great concert. It is definitely one of those once-in-a-lifetime concerts.
If you look closely at Willie’s guitar in some of the pictures I took, you can see the hole mentioned in this excerpt from Willie’s Wikipedia page.
Nelson’s principal guitar is a Martin N-20 nylon-string acoustic, which he has named “Trigger”, after Roy Rogers’ horse. Constant strumming over the decades has worn a large sweeping hole into the guitar’s body near the sound hole. Its soundboard has been signed over the years by over a hundred of Nelson’s friends and associates, from fellow musicians to lawyers and football coaches.
I took a couple of videos during the concert, besides taking pictures. The first one is a snippet of On the Road Again. The second one is of I’ll Fly Away.
