It seems like Twitter has been gaining in popularity lately. I’ve been a member of the social networking site for several months now.
What is Twitter?
Twitter is a service where people can share 140-character messages with their friends and followers. This can be simple status updates (like Facebook) or comments, opinions or observations about life. Twitter is extremely open-ended in this regard, which is why it’s so popular. (Restrictor Plated)
Who is on Twitter?
I joined Twitter because of NASCAR. Several fans were already members or were joining about the same time I was. Twitter gave us a forum to update each other on ourselves and also communicate easily during races. Here are some lists of NASCAR-related Twitter users that have been created recently. There are drivers, teams, sponsors, bloggers, fans, etc listed here for NASCAR fans to follow.
Since joining, I’ve found several celebrities to follow (Ashton Kutcher, Lance Armstrong, Jake Owen, among others). My favorite blogger – The Pioneer Woman – is even on Twitter. Plus, recently, I’ve been finding more and more local Twitter accounts (40/29 News, Tyson Foods, George’s Majestic Lounge, among others). I even have friends & acquaintances from northwest Arkansas on there now.
Twitter is even making the news more and more lately. A local Twitter user recently got national attention for tweeting regrading a trial he was a juror on.
How do you access Twitter?
I use a combination of Twitter.com, TwitterFon on my iPhone, and TweetDeck on my computer. I’ve also tried Twitterific and Twhirl on my computer. There are several other applications for the iPhone and I’ve heard of more than one app for the Blackberry as well.

If you aren’t a Twitter member yet, you should check it out. (The link above to Restrictor Plated’s NASCAR Twitter list has a good explanation of what Twitter is and how to use it for NASCAR and non-NASCAR fans alike.)
