The first Italian settlers in an Arkansas town now called Tontitown arrived here in 1898. Each year in August, Tontitown holds the Grape Festival. While the festival does have carnival rides, a used book sale, and a queen contest, the highlights of the festival for me are getting the fresh local grapes and the spaghetti dinners. The spaghetti isn’t Ragu or <insert pasta brand name here>. The church started making homemade pasta at least a month ago and, of course, the sauce is homemade. The fried chicken and rolls to go with it are both excellent as well. I’ve seriously never had any spaghetti that compares to Tontitown spaghetti. (I’ve never been to Italy but I feel sure this is very, very close to what you would get there.) We’re headed out tonight to get our spaghetti dinner (& maybe some grape ice cream if I have room in my stomach).

Penni posted her favorite & not-so favorite foods a few minutes ago. The two of us have discovered over the course of the past few months that we have a lot in common. I’m thinking we have found something that we aren’t quite so similar in. I’ll let you compare for yourself.

Here are my favorite foods/types of food.

Pizza – I could eat pizza for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (and do sometimes). I’m not a cold pizza person, though.

Mexican – I love spicy food. I love Mexican food. At least half of the food I eat contains some sort of a Mexican feel.

Sausage – I love breakfast sausage. Deer meat makes the best breakfast sausage.

Homemade Ice Cream – I’m not someone that eats a lot of ice cream. I do love homemade ice cream, though. I prefer my grandmother’s recipe but I really haven’t had any that I don’t like.

Strawberries – I wish strawberries were in season around here year round.

Smoked Beef Brisket – My dad can smoke brisket like no one else.

Fresh Corn on the Cob – Yes, it must be fresh. The road-side vegetable stands are wonderful things when it comes to getting corn on the cob.

Here are the foods I hate. (I know hate is a strong word but that’s how I feel.)

Bananas – In preschool, I had to stay in from recess because I refused to eat the banana we had for dessert at lunch. I still remember it. I’m not sure how long they kept me in but I do remember that I never ate the banana.

Tomatoes – I’m kind of weird when it comes to tomatoes. I will eat them (kind of) in chili and other foods. I will also sometimes eat grape & cherry tomatoes with a salad. I don’t like “regular” tomatoes, though (like on a sandwich or just eating them sliced).

Romaine Lettuce – I love salad. I don’t know why but I am very partial to using iceberg lettuce and/or spinach in salads. Romaine has too much crunch and not enough leaf, I guess.

Sweet Tea – I know I’m from the south so I should love sweet tea. I don’t, though. I prefer unsweetened tea. In my opinion, if I want a sweet caffeinated beverage, I’ll just grab a coke.
